[Global Research Trends] 1. Top 12 Countries for Lithium Ion Battery Publications
/ Scinapse Trends Series #1
We are starting a new series called ‘Scinapse Trends’, which will regularly update research trends to make the researcher's journey easier. This series will be updated weekly or bi-weekly on every Fridays.
Research on lithium-ion batteries has surged over the past decade. With the growing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) and portable devices, the development of high-performance and safer batteries has intensified. Research on new materials, such as solid-state electrolytes, has also increased. The influence of this field, crucial for innovations in mobility and technology, continues to grow. As research activity rises, so do the number of papers, citations, and funding from government and industry collaborations. I will introduce a method to view related indicators and objective impacts all at once.
Scinapse is not just an academic paper search engine but also an academic analytical tool that allows you to explore experts appropriate for your research field and topic or to find annual trends in that research.
Starting today, I would like to introduce research trends and data that can be observed in Scinapse for recent emerging research topics and fields. First, we will look at the research on ‘lithium-ion batteries.’
The top 12 countries in terms of the total number of papers (publications) on a five-year basis from 2010 to 2024 are as follows. (You can focus on the top 10 countries, but the top 12 were selected to examine the dynamic changes over 15 years.)
Top 12 Countries in Research Publications on Lithium-Ion Batteries
It can be seen that China and the United States have conducted extensive research continuously, ranking 1st and 2nd, respectively, for 10 years.
While both countries have held the top 2 positions during the years under observation, the number of publications surged exponentially over the past decade for China, moving from 2,832 in 2014 to 10,602 in 2024. Eventually, South Korea and Japan experienced changes too. However, a drastic shift in the rankings of the United Kingdom and India is observed, as they moved up from the 12th to the 6th , and the 11th to the 3rd positions from 2014 to 2024, respectively.
What specific changes have there been in the li-ion research fields?
On the other hand, looking at the qualitative changes in addition to the quantitative changes, energy storage and battery technology research has attempted various innovative approaches to improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries.
Over the last 7 years, the research focus has been on improving the charging speed, capacity, and stability of lithium-ion batteries by developing advanced materials and structures for high-performance batteries, including all-solid-state battery technology, flexible anodes, and safety-enhanced separators.
For the last 5 years, research has focused on also developing advanced materials and structures for high-performance lithium-ion battery anodes, including porous silicon, polypyrrole-modified electrodes, and molecularly tailored lithium-arene complexes. In the last 3 years, research has mainly focused on advanced modeling techniques, state-of-charge estimation methods, thermal management systems, and safety considerations for lithium-ion batteries.
What is Scinapse?
Based on real-time citation analysis technology, Scinapse quantitatively and accurately determines the impact within a specific field or region, providing precise data-driven research trends instead of those based on subjective judgment.
The “AI Research Insights”, which shows how research has been conducted and progressed within your search criteria over the last 3, 5, or 7 years, will be released within this month. Coming soon! :)
